Manti couple are rescued from forest
A prominent Manti resident and his wife are both in fair condition after spending Sunday night deep in Fishlake National Forest after their car got stuck off a dirt road in a snow bank.
A search and rescue team located Max Call, 88, the former publisher of the Manti Messenger newspaper, and his wife, Beth, via helicopter Monday morning.
Both were transported to the hospital and were expected to be released Monday night.
While Beth Call stayed with the stuck vehicle, Max Call left Sunday night and hiked all night until he received enough satellite signal on his cell phone to call his son, who, in turn, called the Sanpete County sheriff, said Suzanne Dean, the current publisher of Sanpete Messenger (formerly the Manti Messenger).
"They were concerned about Beth Call; she had been in the car all night with freezing temperatures," Dean said. "The helicopter landed, picked her up, then they started hovering around looking for Max. Then they saw him just standing there and picked him up, too."
