The numbers are interesting. Here, some 26 years later, BYU's current tandem of Max Hall and Dennis Pitta have also been putting up some incredible numbers and they've got this fall to add to the totals.

In fact, the past two seasons, the Hall/Pitta total is now 142 catches — which Young/Hudson never got to — for a total of 1,896 yards. While Hudson set the NCAA record for a single game by a tight end (259), Pitta has had a game of 213 yards.

Hall and Pitta are up 370 total yards and 28 catches to the 1983 BYU duo.

Pitta needs 19 catches to tie Hudson's BYU career total of 178.

"The tight-end position has always been as important to that offensive scheme, almost, as the quarterback," Hudson told the Deseret News last week.

"To be the first one to go to the Hall of Fame — and I'm sure there will be many more after me, like (former Cougar) Chad Lewis and (current Cougar) Dennis Pitta, who is a fantastic player — I guess the (National Football) Foundation is starting to recognize what great tight ends BYU continues to put out. There will be more to come after me, I'm sure."
