Leonardo's doubts surface in 'Di Esperienza'

With rich fabrics and full sleeves, Haworth noted, "we're not replaying his life in a traditional sense, it's a modern retelling," she said, "and I very much like that deconstruction, post-modern view of something."

"I've been to rehearsals, but I haven't seen the whole costume design, and I'm getting pretty excited about it," said Bennett. "I know it's going to bring da Vinci into the modern age."

Bennett said this is a "show about one of the greatest artists and one of the most brilliant minds of all of Western civilization, and he was hard on himself and had self-doubt."

So even though those in the audience weren't the first to sketch a baby in its mother's womb or a make a cast of the human heart or conceptualize a helicopter or a tank, Bennett hopes that as they watch the show "they'll give themselves a bit of a break."
