A few tables away from the Smiths, 9-year-old Drake Hastings cut and glued and drew Valentines for U.S. soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan. "Roses are red, Violets are blue, You're serving our country, and we love you!" he wrote.

Rachel Hastings, a 19-year-old UVU student majoring in hotel lodging and management, made valentines to honor her brother, scheduled to return from Iraq next month.

"He likes receiving these, so I'm pretty sure others do, too," she said. On one card, she wrote, "Thank you for your hard work and courage for our country. We appreciate what you're doing for us. You're kind for sacrificing so much."

She knows the sacrifices are real because her brother has been in some firefights and because he has said he'll never eat strawberries again. She doesn't know why.

"They may not get injured much," she said of the soldiers, "but they're affected by it every day of their lives."

Other cards included messages like, "May the gods protect you," Thank you, Love Sarah" and "May your family find blessings unnumbered.
