ST. GEORGE — (AP) — A man has been sentenced to life in prison without parole for the kidnapping of a 16-year-old girl in 2004.

Judge James L. Shumate sentenced Marc Clifton Bryant, 48, to life in prison without parole for aggravated kidnapping and three consecutive sentences of five years to life in prison for three counts of rape.

Washington County Attorney Eric Gentry says Bryant became a father figure to the teenage daughter of a woman he was living with in St. George.

Gentry says the two began a sexual relationship and one night, Bryant tortured the girl by burning her with a screwdriver heated with a blowtorch. Gentry says Bryant also tried to drown her and kidnapped and abused her.

Bryant, whose attorney says he will appeal, also was convicted of several other charges.
