Conference hoops coaches expect tough sledding

Biggest challenge: Typically, UNM enters league play with a glossy, inflated non-conference record. But this year, coach Steve Alford upgraded the preseason schedule with games against Creighton, VCU, Drake and Texas Tech. While the Lobos' record may not be as impressive as usual, the tougher schedule could serve them well in MWC play. While UNM is difficult to beat at The Pit, it tends to struggle on the road.

San Diego State

Record: 10-3

Best win: vs. Fresno State, 80-56 (Nov. 22).

Worst losses: None.

Biggest weapon: Senior forward Kyle Spain is among the league leaders in scoring (16.3 ppg). He has proven to be a solid 3-point threat and leads the league in free throw percentage. A year ago, Spain was suspended for the season for a violation of team rules and his absence hurt the Aztecs down the stretch.

Biggest challenge: SDSU has plenty of talent, but can coach Steve Fisher mold it into a cohesive unit that can contend for a conference title? If the Aztecs can limit off-the-court distractions and keep everybody on the same page on the court, they will impact the league race.

TCU

Record: 8-5

Best wins: at Colorado, 62-46 (Dec. 3); vs. Wichita State, 57-48 (Dec. 8).

Worst loss: at Louisiana Tech, 72-67 (Dec. 22).

Biggest weapon: Senior forward Kevin Langford averages a team-high 12.7 points and 4.4 rebounds per game. He is a veteran who has been through the MWC wars.

Biggest challenge: For first-year coach Jim Christian, there may be a steep learning curve, trying to figure out MWC foes' tendencies and how to beat them, particularly on the road. Meanwhile, Christian was a proven winner at Kent State. How long will it take him to turn the Horned Frogs in contenders?

UNLV

Record: 12-2

Best wins: at UTEP, 80-67 (Nov. 24); vs. Arizona, 79-64 (Dec. 20); at Louisville, 56-55 (Wednesday).

Worst loss: vs. California, 73-55 (Nov. 28).
