DVD sets a great way to spend Christmas cash
"A Beautiful Mind" (2001) lets you inside the mind of genius mathematician/schizophrenic John Nash. This winner of the Academy Award for Best Picture stars Russell Crowe as Nash and Jennifer Connelly (Best Supporting Actress) as his truly long-suffering wife. It also won Oscars for Best Director (Howard) and Best Screenplay. Bonus features include deleted scenes.
"Cinderella Man" (2005) is another vehicle to display the formidable talents of Russell Crowe. This time he's boxer Jim Braddock, who driven by a love for his starving family and overcomes gigantic odds to have a comeback. Renee Zellweger plays his wife. Bonus features include a history of boxing, deleted scenes, a blow-by-blow commentary on the original Baer-Braddock fight, commentary by Braddock's family and friends and commentary on the making of the movie.
"Shirley Temple: America's Sweetheart Collection" (20th Century Fox, not rated by G, 266 minutes, $29.98): Now an octogenarian herself, Shirley Temple will remain forever that little dimpled, curly-top charmer. She was probably a favorite of your mother, or grandmother, but the child star's movies are still appealing family fare for old and young alike.
This boxed set features "Stowaway," "Wee Willie Winkie" and "Young People." The set is Volume 6 in a collection. The restored DVDs are in the original black and white, although some fans have complained on Shirley Temple Web sites that they prefer the colorized versions.
"Stowaway" (1936) also stars Robert Young and Alice Faye. In it, Shirley plays Ching-Ching, a child who hides in a car trunk after her guardians are killed in Shanghai. The car is shipped to the United States with Ching-Ching inside.
"Wee Willie Winkie" (1937) features Cesar Romero and was directed by John Ford. Shirley lives in India and wins over her cantankerous grandfather (C. Aubrey Smith) and his British regiment as well as his enemy (Romero).
"Young People" (1940) features Shirley as a teen (Wendy) who had been adopted by a husband-and-wife vaudeville team. They decide to settle down for their daughter's sake but the show business people must face questions about their mortality from their new neighbors.
"Operation Valkyrie: The Stauffenberg Plot to Kill Hitler" (Koch Vision, 2 discs, not rated, 76 minutes, $19.98): History, not Hollywood, tells the true story of Claus Schenk Graf von Stauffenberg, who unsuccessfully led a group of Germans conspiring to assassinate Adolf Hitler on July 20, 1944. A new movie, "Valkyrie," starring Tom Cruise opened Christmas Day, but this documentary tells the true story.
