Scrooge a conservative

Watching "A Christmas Carol" on television last night, I suddenly realized that Ebenezer Scrooge is the quintessential conservative — squeezing, grasping, covetous, feeling no obligation whatever to anyone but himself. So what if people are poor, starving or in trouble? "Are there no prisons?" (But, you say, they provide us with jobs. Yes, and Cratchit should be very grateful.)

Scrooge didn't become a decent human being until he became a liberal.
