High school athletes of the week
Top-ranked Juan Diego will need a big game from Markosian, a center on offense and nose tackle on defense, when it faces No. 2 Hurricane in the 3A state final on Friday at Rice-Eccles Stadium.
If past performances are any indication of what coach John Colosimo & Co. will get from Markosian, however, expect a huge performance. In each game this season, Markosian has been a rock in the middle of both of Juan Diego's lines.
LINDSAY CARD, Richfield, volleyball: This senior outside hitter did more than pick apart opposing defenses. She gave a young team consistency and confidence."Lindsay led our team in passing and anchored our defense," said head coach Brett Beagley. "It seemed like she was always in the right place at the right time. The closer the game got, the better she played."
Card finished the season with 158 digs and 157 kills. She averaged nine kills and nine digs per match, which was quite a feat as the 2A state champions defeated most opponents in three straight sets. She also led the team in passing effectiveness.
Maybe most importantly, however, she helped her younger teammates stay calm and confident, no matter what the situation.
"A great leader on the court," said Beagley. "She never got rattled."
