High school football: Morgan stuns Logan to take control of Region 11 race
That's what Morgan head coach Kovi Christensen told his team leading up to its game with Logan.
Those talks must have worked. Jacob Kinsey rushed for 176 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Trojans to a stunning 28-21 victory over the Grizzlies.
"We just came in with a fire," Kinsey said. "All week coach was telling us we can do it, we can do it. We just had to believe."
Morgan (6-2, 3-0 Region 11), which extended its winning streak to five games, remained undefeated in league play.
"They outplayed us, it's pretty simple," Logan coach Mike Favero said. " ... They deserve credit for the win and we'll see how we bounce back."
Kinsey scored on a 57-yard touchdown run, then added the two-point conversion, to put the Trojans ahead to stay at 28-21 with 11:49 left in the game.
"It was the hole," Kinsey said. "Sometimes Logan's line, they were blowing it up. But our line just stepped up, it was all on our line tonight."
Logan (6-2, 2-1) still had plenty of clock to work with, but Morgan's defense didn't back down against the Grizzlies' high-powered offense.
On Logan's first two possessions in the fourth quarter, the Grizzlies turned it over on downs and had to punt. Logan's final series of the night started from the Trojans' 29 with one second left in the game, but Jeff Manning's pass to Brennen Alleman fell incomplete.
"From a little town of Morgan, this is probably the biggest game we've ever played," Kinsey said. "Logan, state champs last year. They've been killing everybody this year, so it feels good to win it."
Morgan finished with 387 yards of total offense, including 351 on the ground.
Dayton Smith added 153 yards and a touchdown on 16 carries for the Trojans.
Manning led the Grizzlies with 332 yards of total offense. He threw three touchdowns on the night.
The Trojans didn't waste any time jumping on Logan. After a total of just seven offensive plays, Morgan was ahead 14-0 with 7:54 left in the first quarter. Ben Van Campen caught a 4-yard touchdown pass from Matt Largent and Smith scored on a 53-yard run.
"It's real frustrating," Manning said. "We came out flat as a team. ... Just overall, it's not that great of a night."
Manning threw touchdown passes of 8, 9 and 50 yards to help give the Grizzlies a 21-14 lead with 3:48 left in the third quarter.
That's when Kinsey took over. He brought the Trojans to within 21-20 with 2:40 to go in the third on a a 34-yard run.
"Our coaches got us settled back down and our senior linemen came through and pulled it out for us," Kinsey said."
