High school football: Salem Hills earns school's first victory
As the losses predictably piled up for a school in its infancy Salem Hills was 0-6 heading into this week Adams and his teammates wished they could give their loyal fans something to cheer about.
They don't have to wish anymore.
Adams rushed for 110 yards and four TDs, and his supporting cast played well around him as Salem Hills ripped apart Carbon, 42-6, Friday to win a varsity football game for the first time in school history.
"I wish it would've been sooner, but it's way good to get it and have some pride for our school," said Adams. "Our crowd's been supporting us this whole time, and we finally got them a win."
Barring a miraculous breakthrough by Carbon in its final two Region 8 contests against Juan Diego and North Sanpete, Friday's win by Salem Hills assures that the Skyhawks will earn a playoff spot in the 3A tournament.
Salem Hills coach Monte Morgan will be the first to tell you that his team remains very much a work in progress and that the Skyhawks' main objective this fall is to simply try to improve from week to week.
The talented playmaker rushed the ball extremely well whether by design or by improvisation to help the Skyhawks pile up a 42-0 lead midway through the third quarter before Morgan inserted his JV players into the game.
"He's done that for us all year," Morgan said of Adams' play-making ability. "He just shows a lot of heart and has a good understanding of what we're trying to do. I'm really glad that he's a junior."
Between him and fellow junior Kolapa Wolfgramm, it seems the Skyhawks have some pieces in place to build upon for the remainder of this year and beyond.
"We're just growing," said Morgan. "Experience is hard when it's on-the-job-type training, but that's what we're doing. That's what we're getting right now. That's what starting a new school is."
