SPRINGVILLE — In a Region 7 bout to separate contenders from pretenders, Mountain View roughed up the Red Devils from Springville, 35-27.

What looked to be a blowout for the Red Devils turned into a Bruin victory thanks to the legs of Mountain View's bruising running back Anthony Heimuli, who rushed for 218 yards.

On the first play from scrimmage for the Bruins, Heimuli busted loose for an 80-yard touchdown run. However, a personal foul penalty negated the score and took the wind out of the Mountain View sails. In the time it took Mountain View (4-1, 4-4) to pull it together the Red Devils (3-1, 5-3) jumped out to a 20-0 lead on the arm of senior quarterback Isaac Allred, who picked the Bruin secondary apart with a combination of short passes.

"We had a lot of heart to battle," said Bruin coach Teko Johnson. "It's a testament to our kids that they battled back 20-0."

A 45-yard touchdown pass from Allred to receiver Jordan Sumsion got things rolling for Springville, which dominated the first quarter. Allred and Sumsion would hook up again, this time on a 12-yard scoring strike pushing the lead to 14-0. Just before the end of the first quarter a Mountain View fumble set the Red Devils up with a short field on the Bruin 23-yard line. Several plays later Allred found pay dirt on a 1-yard quarterback sneak.

The Bruins turned to Heimuli to get them back in the game. Carrying the ball, several Springville defenders and the weight of the Bruin offense on his back Heimuli scored on a 55-yard touchdown run to give his team new life. After a Red Devil punt the Bruins and Heimuli drove into the Springville red zone before quarterback Dustin Thacker found Nate Stroshine in the end zone to cut the lead to 20-14 at the half.

Early in the second half Springville running back Colton Ramon scampered in for a 28-yard touchdown run and it looked like the Red Devils were to rip off another region win. However, the Bruins had other plans scoring 21 unanswered points in the second half to capture the win.

Mountain View scored on a 70-yard double-reverse and a double-reverse, half-back pass to take the lead 28-27 midway through the fourth quarter. Heimuli tacked on another touchdown run and the Bruin defense held to close out the game.

"We were so sick of getting beat up," Heimuli said. "That's what we did, we came back."
