High school soccer: Miners capture Region 10 title
The Miners left that game, which ended in a draw, feeling unsatisfied with how their offense played. Sure, they created plenty of shots, but few were on frame, and hardly any got past the Ravens' defense.
"That first game was so frustrating," senior forward Hanna Terry said. "We had everything there but the finishing."
With Terry leading the way, finding offense was not a problem this time around. She scored a goal in both halves to lead Park City to a 2-1 victory over Waterford on Thursday afternoon.
The Miners clinched their second Region 10 championship in three years and claimed a No. 1 seed going into next week's 3A girls soccer tournament.
Park City took a 1-0 lead on Terry's first goal in the 24th minute. Alex Woodcock found her on a cross from the corner. Terry had ample space in front of the 6-yard box to make something happen, and she did just that, squeezing the ball between Ravens keeper Jeannie Woller and the far post.
Waterford evened it just before halftime, shortly after Woller left the game on crutches after suffering what looked like a knee injury.
Terry came out and quickly got the goal back in the second half. She pulled up at the top of the penalty area in the 48th minute after receiving a pass, pivoted and rocketed it over the head of backup Ravens keeper Hailey Hebdon to make it 2-1.
Park City's offense was buoyed up by a series of strong offensive performances prior to facing Waterford again. Terry thought it provided a positive element for her and the rest of the team.
"We've had a couple of games where like seven different players have scored," Terry said. "Once we get that finishing in, it just keeps getting easier and easier. So we knew we could outplay them. We just needed the finishing."
It helped Park City's cause that its defense held the Ravens in check. Waterford didn't have much success capitalizing on its speed to create scoring plays because the Miners excelled at holding possession in the midfield even while battling fierce winds for much of the second half.
"I thought we did a good job of keeping the ball on the ground in the wind and (keeping) control of the pace of play," Park City coach Chip Cook said.
