SPANISH FORK — Police arrested a Spanish Fork man Wednesday after reports he held a screwdriver to his son's neck.

Police said the 26-year-old man became angry when his girlfriend's family insisted he leave their home, according to a police affidavit filed in 4th District Court.

The man, who has a history of making threats with weapons, then took his 1-year-old son and barricaded himself in a basement room, telling the family he was not going to let go of the child or leave, the affidavit states.

He was arrested and booked into Utah County Jail for investigation of child abuse, commission of domestic violence in the presence of a child and commission of aggravated assault in the presence of a child.

Family members knocked down the door to the room and found the man holding a screwdriver to his neck and his child's neck. They tried to disarm the man, but in the process the child's mother received a minor injury from the screwdriver. Once family members finally did get the screwdriver away from the man, he started to squeeze the child around the neck with his arm, according to the affidavit.
