Police recover BMW in carjacking, seek 2 men in incident
Just after midnight Monday, a man driving a BMW was stopped at the intersection of 1100 East and 4500 South, said Salt Lake County Sheriff's Lt. Paul Jaroscak. A Honda with two men pulled up next to him.
One of the men in the Honda got out of his car, reached into the BMW, grabbed the driver by the collar, pulled him out of the car and put a gun to his head, Jaroscak said.
The carjacker demanded the man's wallet, cell phone and car keys, he said. The suspect drove off in the BMW with the Honda close behind, Jaroscak said.
Detectives believe the Honda may be the same vehicle a deputy pulled over earlier in the evening near 3700 South and 1100 East. When the deputy asked for a driver's license and registration, the man pretended to reach for the glove box but then drove off. The deputy got the license plate number and discovered it was stolen, Jaroscak said.
The only description investigators had of the carjackers was two Hispanic men wearing bandanas.
The BMW was found abandoned, "stripped and destroyed," in a church parking lot about four miles from where it was taken, Jaroscak said.
