Leaders, businesses honored for support of people with disabilities

Local businesses and individuals were recognized today for contributions to support the independence of people with disabilities.

The Dignity Through Work breakfast presented by the Community Foundation for the Disabled and Columbus Community Center recognized those who have found entrepreneurial ways to employ disabled people.

Awards were to be presented to H. David Burton, Presiding Bishop of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, who has received the Visionary Leadership Award in recognition of his efforts to advance workplace opportunities for the disabled.

GE Capital Financial received the Social Enterprise Award for efforts to create meaningful employment for the disabled.

Einstein Noah Restaurant Group is the Outstanding Business Partner of the Year, an award recognizing a local business that has partnered with Columbus to create and deliver training and employment opportunities.

The award for Columbus Outstanding Worker was given to one of five finalists recognized for their work ethic and skills. The finalists are Heather Campbell, Brian Millet, Sean Gilbert, Gary Hemmert and Krista Hale.

The event is in conjunction with National Disability Employment Awareness Month.

Columbus opened in 1968 as a grass-roots effort of a group of parents wanting to establish a community-based employment and education program for their children. The center now offers comprehensive residential, training, employment and day programs for adults.
