Man gets 18 years for crime spree
Robert Douglas Preece, 44, was sentenced last week after pleading guilty to three violations of the federal Hobbs Act, which deals with business robberies, a pair of bank robberies, a carjacking and two firearms charges. Preece also will serve 60 months of supervised release and pay more than $12,000 restitution, the U.S. Attorney's Office for Utah said.
Preece pleaded guilty in connection with a 2007 crime spree that included the robberies of a gas station on Highland Drive, a Check-N-Go in South Salt Lake and a Quizno's in West Valley City.
Preece, who is a convicted killer, was accidentally released from the Salt Lake County Jail last year because the district attorney's office did not file criminal charges against him in time. Once released, authorities said he robbed the same First Utah Bank twice at 3826 S. 2300 East. Salt Lake County District Attorney Lohra Miller's office at the timeblamed it on a communications problem between the jail and prosecutors.
He was arrested a couple of months later in Portland, Ore., and indicted by a federal grand jury in Salt Lake City.
