Demographics part of why feds spend little per person

• About $3 of every $4 of the federal procurement contracts coming into Utah goes to Defense Department contractors.

• About half of the salaries for federal workers living in Utah go to people working for the military. After the Defense Department, the Postal Service has the next biggest federal payroll in Utah, about 20 percent of the overall state total.

• The Defense Department provides about a third of all the money that all federal agencies spend in Utah. Utah ranks No. 14 in per capita defense spending among the states.

• Utahns received $2.38 billion through guaranteed loan programs in 2007, including $1.1 billion in mortgage insurance for homes, $472.7 through the Federal Family Education Loan program and $322 million in small business loans.

• Federal spending in Utah increased by 9.2 percent in 2007 compared to 2006. The national average increase per state was only 4.4 percent.

• While Utah has 0.9 percent of the nation's population, it received only 0.7 percent of the federal spending among the states. It received 0.6 percent of "retirement and disability" payments; 0.4 percent of "other direct payments" (including Medicare), 0.7 percent of grants; 0.9 percent of procurement spending; and 1.0 percent of salaries and wages.
