LINDON — Las Vegas still may have been nearly 400 miles away, but that didn't stop a man from telling a 16-year-old girl they were just a mile away from his brother's Nevada home.

The 22-year-old Farmington man was arrested and booked into Utah County Jail on $10,000 bail for investigation of obstruction of justice and unlawful detention after getting caught lying to police.

Police and paramedics responded to the Timpanogos Harley-Davidson in Lindon after the man reported his 17-year-old wife was pregnant and having abdominal pain, according to a 4th District Court affidavit of probable cause. Police noticed the couple was dressed in dirty, tattered clothing and appeared to be homeless.

When officers ran a check on the man's California ID, they discovered he was wanted for various charges in Georgia and Pennsylvania, including a charge of unlawful sex with a minor. When police pressed the man for information, he admitted the girl was not his wife and that she was only 16. The man then told police the girl was legally emancipated from her parents and that they were traveling on foot to Las Vegas to get married.

The girl told police the man said he had filed the emancipation paperwork and that she agreed to go to Las Vegas with him if she was emancipated. The girl told police that after walking for a while, she changed her mind and decided she didn't want to go to Las Vegas, at which time the man grabbed her, pulled her down the street and told her they weren't going home.

The girl said she tried to leave the man and flag down a police officer, but the man stopped her. She said she then felt pain in her abdomen, but the man insisted they were only a mile away from his brother's Las Vegas home. Police said the two were walking in Lindon, and even though the girl wanted to leave, she was afraid of being alone in a different state.

Finally, the man agreed to stop at the Harley-Davidson after the girl agreed to tell paramedics they were married. Once on the scene, officers contacted the girl's father in Salt Lake County, who said his daughter did not return home from school Thursday afternoon and that he filed a missing persons report with police in Salt Lake City.

The father told police his daughter is not emancipated and that she did not have permission to travel with the man.

South Salt Lake police were notified of the incident, and an investigation is continuing.
