High school football: Darts stopped by Warriors
Davis got things started off right with its true strength, defense. It stuffed the Warriors for a loss of 4 yards over three plays, then a bad snap on the punt allowed the Darts to take over on Kamehameha's 5. Shortly thereafter, Gavin Fowler hit Quentin Belnap on the rollout for six points.
A failed PAT left Davis ahead 6-0.
All was well as four plays later Ryan Avery intercepted Warriors quarterback Edmund Kamano on Kamehameha's 40-yard line.
Unfortunately for the Darts, the Warriors returned the favor with their own interception on the 19-yard line.
This wasn't the last interception that would hurt the Darts, and the second cost them dearly. While Davis put together a drive just crossing midfield, Anthony Tokunaga jumped a screen pass and returned the pick 57 yards, which combined with a successful extra point put Kamehameha up 7-6. That score held until the half.
Davis came out strong to start the third quarter with Tanner Hinds putting on a show. In seven rushes, he moved the ball 65 yards, and about half of those were with Warrior defenders hanging on him. Due to penalties and a big loss on one play, however, the Darts turned the ball over on downs on the 21-yard line with nothing to show from the drive.
The Dart defense again proved immovable, forcing the Warriors to go three and out, letting Hinds and the offense take over again. Starting on its own 44, Davis was able to push to the red zone, but again it could not convert on fourth down. This seemed to spark Kamehameha's offense, which marched 85 yards for an insurance touchdown. It was the only touchdown allowed by the Darts' defense this season.
Trade-offs of punts and turnovers filled the game until there was just 1:50 left. The Warriors had pushed to the 17-yard line, but the Darts' strong defense was able to hold on fourth-and-one, giving its team one last shot.
This time, there was no messing around.
Davis chewed up yardage, going 71 yards in five plays to get to the 14. On third-and-six, Fowler connected with Jordan Welk in the end zone, but after an officials' conference, the pass was deemed incomplete.
On fourth down, Fowler's pass was broken up, and that was all she wrote. Taking over with just 37 seconds left, the Warriors were able to down the ball and win the game.
