High school football: Orem opens up playbook to stop Snow Canyon
The Tigers (1-1) drew first blood on the opening kickoff when a double handoff ended in a 99-yard touchdown sprint for kick returner Devin Miner. Lance Chatterly caught the ball at the goal line before handing it off to Brayden Hill who dished it to Miner for the six.
A strong drive by the Warriors (0-2) led by quarterback Adam Timo resulted in a touchdown as he scooted in from 2-yards out to pull within one as the kick was failed. However, even with the two fumbles recovered by Snow Canyon the Warriors failed to see the end zone again in the first half.
The Tigers crossed the goal line twice more in the second quarter first on a 50-yard fumble return for a touchdown by defensive lineman Justin Long and then on a 13-yard strike from quarterback Josh Hamblin to a diving Tyler Boulter to stretch the lead to 21-6.
"Last week against Viewmont we looked horrible," said Orem coach Robert Steele. "This time we really focused to try and make sure we did our assignments and not just let our athletic abilities take over."
The Warriors established themselves early in the second half as Timo again led Snow Canyon to pay dirt as he scampered in from 24-yards out, but an Orem drive on the following possession ended with a Tiger touchdown that dashed the Warriors' momentum.
On the night Timo racked up 157 yards rushing as he split time between quarterback and running back. He put the Warriors in the red zone again in the fourth quarter before Austin Larsen found Andrew Johnston in the end zone on a 3-yard touchdown pass to cut the lead to 30-20.
"We knew we really couldn't shut him (Timo) clear down," Steele said. "So we had different schemes to have different guys coming as he started heading one direction or another."
Snow Canyon had one last push as they came up with an interception inside Tiger territory, but couldn't punch it in as it suffered its second loss on the season.
