The young Orem boy injured when a homemade firework exploded is continuing to improve at Primary Children's Medical.

Thursday afternoon, doctors upgraded Bridger Hunt's medical condition to serious after they successfully removed the ventilator he's relied on to help him breathe since he was hospitalized July 24.

"He seems more coherent and awake," said hospital spokeswoman Bonnie Midget. "Previously, when they tried to remove the ventilator, he got worked up — very agitated —and they had to resedate him. But not this time. He's doing very well."

Bridger will turn 12 on Friday. He is expected to remain in the hospital for several months.
