Fillmore wins first U.S. Amateur match
Fillmore, a 22-year-old native of Salt Lake City, advances to play Kevin Tway of Edmond, Okla., today at 5:30 a.m. MDT. Tway is the son of PGA Tour player Bob Tway and a sophomore at Oklahoma State.
If he wins that match, Fillmore will play another match in the afternoon with a chance to advance to Friday's quarterfinals.
In Tuesday's match, Fillmore lost the fourth hole when Beal birdied but squared the match at No. 7 with a par. He birdied the next hole and took a two up lead with another birdie at No. 10.
Beal won the next two holes with birdies, but Fillmore won Nos. 13, 14 and 15 with pars and closed out the match at No. 16 as the players halved the hole.
Utah's two other entrants in the U.S. Am failed to make it into match play. St. George's Matt McArthur shot a 149 and missed by four shots, while 16-year-old Garrett Fotu of Alpine, shot a 150.
