Family members cleaning out the house of a loved one who recently passed away were surprised to find what they thought were explosives.

The family was cleaning the house, near 4000 West and 5000 South, Wednesday, and had already disposed of some gunpowder, when they found what appeared to be an old grenade and dynamite.

Firefighters from the Unified Fire Authority responded and determined the dynamite was actually old road flares, said UFA Capt. Jay Fearnley.

But the grenade was possibly real, he said.

Firefighters were able to render the device safe by taping it up, Fearnley said. The grenade was taken to another location where it could be safely detonated, he said.

Fearnley said crews had been called to the man's house in the past for similar problems.
