SNOWBASIN — More than $20,000 will be up for grabs as many of the world's top off-road endurance athletes gather at Pineview Reservoir for the XTERRA Mountain Championships.

The triathlon races — a 1.5K swim, 30K mountain bike and 10K trail run for the tough guys and a 0.75K swim, 16K mountain bike and 5K trail run for the just-a-little-less-tough guys — begin at 9 a.m. and will take participants from the Ogden Valley up the mountain for a finish at Snowbasin.

The event is not for the weak of heart.

XTERRA officials say several hundred athletes from 30 states will be in attendance for the events with points being earned toward the tour series and a berth in the XTERRA World Championship in Hawaii.

In addition to the triathlons, XTERRA is holding a 21K trail run starting at Pineview Reservoir at 10 a.m. on Saturday and the Breeder's Choice K9 Challenge run Friday night at 5:30 p.m. in downtown Ogden.
