New fires burning in Box Elder, Zion
An 800-acre wildfire was burning in Box Elder County on Monday. The Devil's fire was sparked on Sunday by lightning storms that moved across the area. It is burning in steep, rocky terrain but is not threatening anything, the Bureau of Land Management said.
The fire was about 60 percent contained Monday with planes, helicopters and numerous ground crews being brought in to fight the fire.
In southern Utah, the Spring Creek fire is burning in the Kolob Canyons area of Zion National Park.
National Park Service officials said the fire is in such a remote location that fire crews cannot access it safely. Instead, the 2-acre fire will be monitored to see if it expands beyond park boundaries before crews will try to put it out.
Smoke from the fire is visible from I-15.
The fire comes as crews are making progress in containing a 500-plus acre blaze burning in the Stansbury Mountains near Grantsville in Tooele County. The Little Bald Mountain fire is about 90 percent contained, but canyons and campgrounds in the area remain closed.
On Friday, state officials rescinded fire restrictions, citing the recent rainfall and monsoonal moisture moving across the area. Fire authorities continue to urge caution for campers and others recreating in the area.
