A 13-year-old boy is dead and a 16-year-old boy is in critical condition at a Salt Lake hospital following an accident on Salt Lake's west side Saturday.

Killed was Kevin Carrillo, 13, and injured was Jacob Mascaro, 16, according to neighbors. Police did not confirm the identities because of the continuing investigation.

Both lived in the neighborhood where the accident happened.

Salt Lake City Police Lt. Brian Purvis said the two boys were on a scooter at about 3 p.m. heading east on 500 South across 900 West when they struck the side of a southbound car and were thrown from the scooter on impact. At least one of the boys was subsequently hit by a passenger van, which was also heading south in the adjacent lane. Purvis said the boys may have driven through a stop sign before the accident.

"According to witnesses, the scooter may not have stopped," Purvis said.

A teenage girl who was a passenger in the van, who asked not to be identified, said the boys did not make the stop at the intersection.

"The motorcycle kids didn't look," the girl said. She said that after the boys struck the car next to them, one of the boys came over the top of the car and went under the van.

Dustin Brooks, 14, is a friend of both victims and said he saw the accident from his yard on the northeast corner of the intersection. While he didn't see whether the boys stopped before crossing 900 West, he said people in the neighborhood have complained about the intersection, which has stop signs on 500 South but not on 900 West.

"Our parents keep trying to get stop signs here," Brooks said.

Purvis said that the two passengers and small child in the car were not injured in the incident nor were any of the occupants of the van. The officer said he had no knowledge of previous problems at the intersection.

Purvis said that because the incident involved a fatality, the investigation could take several weeks to determine the cause and he could not speculate about driver fault.
