Toddler killed, another hurt in separate auto-pedestrian accidents
Just before 6:30 p.m. a sport utility vehicle with a man, woman and two children pulled into a driveway near 9650 S. Shettleston Circle (4120 West). The man and two children got out, and the man began putting the children into another car, said South Jordan Police Chief Lindsay Shepherd.
While he was putting one child in a car seat, the driver of the SUV, a woman in her 30s, started to leave.
"A witness across the street saw the (other) child standing in front of the vehicle and tried to get the driver's attention," Shepherd said.
But it was too late as the large SUV hit the young boy and drove over him. He was pronounced dead a short time later at Jordan Valley Hospital.
"It's just a tragic accident," he said.
The relation between the woman and the boy was unclear Friday, Shepherd said. He also did not know whose house the SUV had stopped at.
The boy's name was not released Friday.
The accident was the second in less than six hours involving a 3-year-old child.
Just as the 3-year-old stepped into the street, a driver at the intersection accelerated to make a turn, didn't see the young girl, and hit her. The girl was in critical condition Thursday night. An update on her condition was not available Friday.
David Wright, 40, was issued a traffic citation for improper lookout.
