SOUTH WEBER — Brent V. Petersen was recently chosen by the City Council as the new mayor.

Petersen, 57, will fulfill the remaining 18 months of Joseph Gertge's term. Gertge, who resigned to take a job in North Dakota, had been mayor for 6 1/2 years.

Petersen is the vice president of operations at the Davis Applied Technology College in Kaysville.

He was a previous member of the South Weber City Council, a member of the Davis Chamber of Commerce Executive Board, a past president of the Kaysville Rotary and Department of Workforce Services regional board member.

He earned his bachelor's degree from Arizona State University and an advanced degree from the University of San Francisco.

Petersen said he was approached by others to consider taking the mayor's position.

"As I reviewed my career experiences I felt could contribute and be an asset to my community and to my fellow citizens," he said in an e-mail to the Deseret News. "I also felt I could accomplish my goals while helping others to reach their potential."

His goals are to implement the City Economic Development Plan, improve the community's preparedness for emergencies and to provide a safe and secure rural environment.

At this time, he said he has no plans to run for election when his term expires.

The mayor's assignments are the Central Weber Sewer District Board; Council of Government; DARE program; Davis County Handicap Services; Davis County Library; Hill Air Force Base liaison; Military Advisory Board, military and veterans affairs; parks and trails annex to general plan; Safe Home School Committee; Utah Transit Authority and mass transit; and the Wasatch Front Regional Council.

Petersen and his wife, Jan, have four daughters — Kim, Dani, Brooke and Jessica — plus three grandchildren.
