Utah ranked 25th nationally in a new report rating the performance of state highway systems.

The study was released by The Reason Foundation, a nonprofit think tank, earlier this week. The foundation based its rankings on each states performance in 12 categories including pavement condition, bridge condition, traffic fatalities, congestion, highway maintenance costs and administrative costs. According to the study, North Dakota ranked first in maintaining roadways and bridges while New Jersey was worst.

Utah ranked 7th in the nation for deficient bridges with 16.37 percent of states bridges being defined as structurally deficient and structurally obsolete. For fatality rates per 100 million vehicle miles traveled Utah ranked 11th.

In the categories for road condition Utah ranked 31st for the shape of the interstate in rural areas and 20th for the state of the urban interstate.
