FREE GUIDED TRIPS

Deer Valley Resort, Mountain Trails Foundation and the Park City Recreation Advisory Board will be offering a new series of guided historical hikes this summer.

The free tours will be offered on three Sundays — Aug. 17 and Sept. 14 and 21.

The hikes are designed to be 50 percent exercise, 50 percent learning and 100 percent fun. Organizers will highlight some of the area's mining history along the way, and participants are encouraged to share their own knowledge of local history.

Reservations are not necessary. Hikers need to meet tour guides at Deer Valley's midmountain Sterling chairlift at 9:30 a.m. The hikes are scheduled to last three to four hours and will cover moderately strenuous terrain at Deer Valley Resort.

Participants should be in good shape, wear sturdy footwear, carry plenty of water and snacks and wear proper sun protection.

Hikes will start at Sterling chairlift, wind through the woods to the New York mine, then continue up to the ridge between Bald Mountain and Flagstaff peak for a dramatic view of the Wasatch Mountains. The return route will lead the group through high-mountain meadows and aspen and evergreen groves. Round-trip distance for the hikes will be less than six miles, with an elevation gain of approximately 900 feet.

UPLAND BOOK AVAILABLE

Utah's Upland Game Guidebook for the 2008-09 hunting season is now available.

In addition to sporting goods stores and the DWR's Web site — www.wildlife.utah.gov/guidebooks — guides are available at DWR offices.

"Utah's upland game hunts begin with the ptarmigan season on Aug. 23," said Dean Mitchell, conservation outreach section chief for the DWR. "The upland game season doesn't end until the cottontail rabbit and snowshoe hare hunts on Feb. 28."
