MormonTimes.com: Hike honors first pioneers in Salt Lake Valley
When the first train of wagons came out of Emigration Canyon on July 22, 1847, the trek was not quite over. The final leg was a 5-mile stretch from the mouth of Emigration Canyon to what is now 500 East and 1700 South, where the first pioneers camped in the Salt Lake Valley.
The hike was re-enacted Saturday morning as a Days of '47 activity. The First Encampment 2008 Hike began at 7 a.m. in Donner Park, at the mouth of Emigration Canyon. Ninety people gathered to "tread where footsteps have trod," as hiker Sofia Jones put it. The hikers followed roughly the same path the pioneers took when they entered the valley.
