Hiker rescued after fall in Provo Canyon

PROVO — A woman who fell 10 feet while hiking and then spent nearly two hours in a mountain pool should have no lasting injuries, Utah County officers said.

The 21-year-old woman was hiking Tuesday afternoon around 12:30 p.m. in the area of First Falls above Sundance in Provo Canyon when she came to a steep area and slipped down, said Utah County sheriff's deputy Collin Gordon.

The woman fell 10 to 12 feet into a waist-deep pool of water and was stranded with no way to get out. Gordon said the woman was not injured in the fall but began showing severe signs of hypothermia.

The friends she was hiking with were able to get a cell phone from other hikers and call for help.

Utah County Search and Rescue Crews and medical personnel were able to hike in to the woman and a medical helicopter was used to get her off the mountain and down to the parking lot near the Aspen Grove trailhead.

Gordon said the woman was taken by ambulance to Utah Valley Regional Medical Center, where she was expected to be released by Tuesday night.

"We're just happy with the way it resolved," Gordon said.
