Rafter suffers broken neck on Green River

Dane Marriott, 30, was part of a group rafting the Green River on Sunday. The Park Service, in a press release issued Tuesday, said the group stopped on a beach in Split Mountain Gorge and Marriott dove into the water from the shore.

Members of the group noticed Marriott face down in the water and unconscious. They pulled him from the river and began yelling for help.

A monument employee and a volunteer — one a Colorado EMT, the other a wilderness first responder — were nearby and responded to the group's calls. They were able to revive and stabilize Marriott, the Park Service said, before moving him to a waiting ambulance at the Split Mountain boat ramp.

Marriott was taken to Ashley Regional Medical Center in Vernal. He was later taken by helicopter to a Salt Lake area hospital where he was being treated for a broken neck.
