A South Jordan man who twice fled from Salt Lake County sheriff's deputies Monday night was in fair condition this morning after crashing the bullet bike he as riding.

About 9 p.m. Monday, a deputy near Solitude Ski Resort tried to stop a speeding motorcycle but the driver refused to pull over, said Salt Lake County Sheriff's Lt. Paul Jaroscak. For safety reasons, the deputy did not engage in a chase with the bullet bike.

The 18-year-old rider stopped at Solitude to get a drink, but unknowingly parked next to an unmarked sheriff's patrol car. When the deputy came out to start talking to the motorcyclist, he noticed the man was very nervous, Jaroscak said.

Just a minute after the rider left, the deputy who had been following the motorcycle pulled up and the told the deputy in the unmarked car what had happened. Those deputies radioed another deputy at the bottom of the canyon to tell him to try and stop the motorcycle. The bullet bike, however, sped past him and refused to pull over, Jaroscak said.

The deputies at the top of the canyon discovered the man had purchased his drink with a credit card and used the information from his receipt to find his house.

Just before 10:30 p.m. the deputies arrived at the man's South Jordan home. But while they were talking to his parents, they learned of a motorcyclist who crashed near 10600 South and 1300 East while doing wheelies and was injured, Jaroscak said. That victim turned out to be the man who refused to pull over.

The man was taken to a local hospital for minor injuries. Possible citations were pending Tuesday.
