Salt Lake Bees: Team rallies in 9th inning to snap losing streak
After Tacoma had gone ahead 2-1 in the top of the ninth on Shawn Garrett's solo home run, the Bees got to Tacoma closer Jared Wells, who blew his first save in nearly a year when he was with Portland.
With one out, Dee Brown hit a bloop shot into shallow left and stretched it into a double. Brandon Wood then drew a walk, and newly called-up catcher Ben Johnson singled to left, scoring Brown. Adam Pavkovich then hit into a fielder's choice, advancing Wood to third. Jordan Czarniecki, who has been with Salt Lake for only 10 days, singled to shallow center field, scoring Wood for the comeback victory.
"I was pretty frustrated with my performance," Czarniecki said. "I was just looking for a pitch to hit, and fortunately I connected, and my bat broke on contact."
The Bees' comeback spoiled a solid outing by Tacoma starter Sean White, who threw eight strong innings, surrendering just one run and seven hits. The Rainiers also turned four double plays, which stopped several rally attempts by the Bees.
"(White) had good stuff with his sinker and slider," Czarniecki said. "He mixes his pitches well."
Salt Lake starter Giancarlo Alvarado kept the Bees in the game, giving up a lone run in the second inning and holding Tacoma to just four hits.
"I was just trying to keep us in the game," said Alvarado, who struck out seven and walked four.
Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the seventh, Salt Lake tied the game on Wood's triple and Johnson's RBI single. That's the way it stayed until the ninth.
"It was a strange game," Salt Lake manager Bobby Mitchell said afterward. "We were hitting the ball hard, unfortunately it was right to their players." Matt White worked the eighth and ninth innings for Salt Lake, and despite surrendering Garrett's home run, he earned the win to go to 4-0 on the year.
