Rock climber rescues a stuck base jumper east of Moab

MOAB — A rock climber rescued a base jumper who slammed against a rock wall and got stuck on a ledge Monday morning.

Ervin Jerome Maye, 41, of West Columbia, S.C., was jumping near Tombstone Rock just east of Moab when he slammed into the rock wall and fell about 100 feet until his parachute got hung up on a ledge, according to the Grand County Sheriff's Office.

Sheriff's deputies and search and rescue crews were called out around 10:40 a.m.

Dave Madera, a local climber who owns a rock climbing business in Moab, scaled about 100 feet up the wall and helped set up a a rope system to lower Maye to safety.

Maye suffered a concussion and cuts on his arm and head. He was taken to Allen Memorial Hospital for further examination.
