Utah firefighters have been called upon to help in California as wildfires continue to rage across that state.

On Wednesday evening, firefighters and engines from Logan, Layton and Syracuse were on their way to Madera, Calif., about 20 miles north of Fresno, said Logan Fire Chief Mark Meaker.

"I think it's a measurement of how serious the situation is that they're reaching out several states away," he said. "I'm glad that we're able to help out, and we would expect the same if we ever needed it."

More than 1,100 wildfires — mostly ignited by lightning — have scorched 680 square miles and destroyed 60 homes and buildings across northern California since June 20, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.

Meaker said the Utah fire departments have sent engines to help protect structures for a two-week commitment.
