Utah Jazz notes: Smith, Fredman given new responsibilities with ballclub
The two moves collectively replace the player-personnel director position left vacant earlier this year, when Troy Weaver left to became an assistant general manager with the Seattle SuperSonics' franchise that plans to play beginning next season in Oklahoma City.
Smith is in his 14th year with the Jazz organization.
In his most-recent position, held for the past five seasons, he provided scouting reports, player profiles and analysis of player statistics and tendencies, and he worked on issues related to players' off-court development.
Smith spent his first five seasons with the Jazz as video coordinator/scout, followed by three seasons as assistant scouting director.
Fredman returns to the Jazz, for whom he previously worked for more than a quarter-century in a variety of capacities, including public relations, assistant coach and scouting director. Prior to spending last season as inaugural general manager of the NBA Development League's Orem-based Flash, he worked five seasons as assistant GM of the Denver Nuggets.
But Boston is one of several teams that has expressed interest in Maggette a long list that includes the Jazz, who, like the Celtics, can offer nothing more a five-year, mid-level exception money deal.
INTEREST IN MILES: The Detroit News reported Thursday that while Jazz restricted free agent C.J. Miles is among at least three perimeter players on the Detroit Pistons' free-agent shopping list, something reported by Booth Newspapers earlier this week, Portland's James Jones "seems the most likely to be signed."
Miles, the News reported, is "a player Pistons coach Michael Curry became fond of during his days overseeing the Development League."
The Jazz have the right to match any offer from another team that Miles, 21, may receive. But Jones, 27, is an unrestricted free agent.
ALUMNI UPDATES: According to the Rocky Mountain News, an unidentified source "said the Denver Nuggets have had discussions about Carlos Arroyo," the ex-Jazz point guard most recently with the Orlando Magic.
