Convicted killer arrested in connection with club shootings
Paul Kenneth Madill, 32, was arrested for investigation of three counts of attempted homicide, four counts of aggravated assault and a restricted person in possession of a weapon.
Investigators say on June 13, Madill fired eight to nine shots into the Three Alarm Saloon, 7273 S. State St. Bullets ricochetted off the floor, walls and pool table, hitting three patrons. None of the injuries were life threatening.
The shooting may have been in retaliation for a fight that happened just prior to the shooting, according to police. Madill was on federal probation at the time of the shooting for a weapons restriction violation.
In 2006, Madill was convicted of negligent homicide after he killed a man a year earlier during a fight by slashing his jugular vein with a broken ceramic coffee mug. He was sentenced to one year in jail.
Madill also has prior convictions for theft and burglary.
The biggest challenge for investigators in the Three Alarm shooting was identifying the gunman. No one at the club that night knew who he was, said Midvale police Sgt. John Salazar.
Once detectives knew who they were looking for, they set up surveillance at Madill's known locations in Tooele and Salt Lake counties.
About 3:30 a.m., a Salt Lake Metro Gang detective doing a routine check of motels in Midvale came across the SUV registered to Madill at a Motel 6, near 7200 South and 450 West. Just as others officers were moving into position, Madill left his hotel room and started to drive away, Salazar said
Officers attempted to pull the vehicle over, but Madill kept going and a chase ensued. Madill drove erratically and was about to cross the median on the Bangerter Highway and drive into on-coming traffic near 6200 South when a Taylorsville police officer performed a PIT maneuver, bumping the fleeing vehicle and causing it to spin out, Salazar said.
The chase wasn't over, however, as Madill got out of his car, climbed over a sound wall and ran, Salazar said.
Police from Sandy, West Jordan, Salt Lake County Sheriff's Office, the Utah Highway Patrol and Midvale set up a containment in the area and caught Madill about an hour later.
