1-year-old drowns at Sugarhouse Park
The girl was at the park with her grandparents when she wandered away from a family party sometime before 6:50 p.m., said Salt Lake Police Lt. Isaac Atencio.
When family members realized the girl was missing, they split up and began searching for her. A man walking on the southeast side of the pond, near 1300 East and 2100 South, saw what he thought was a doll in the water, police said. When the man realized it was a child, he waded into the water and pulled her out.
The water was about 18 inches deep in that area, Atencio said.
The girl was unconscious when police arrived at the park. It was unclear how long she had been in the water, though police said she had been missing for five to 10 minutes.
The girl was taken by ambulance to Primary Children's Medical Center where she later died, Atencio said.
