Utah Jazz notes: Despite full roster, O'Connor expects active summer
If restricted free agent C.J. Miles and 2008 first-round draft choice Kosta Koufos both are added, that's a maximum-allowable 15.
Should be a quiet summer for the Jazz, then, right? Not necessarily, general manager Kevin O'Connor warned.
"I think we'll be active, because there's a lot of issues that can be sign-and-trades, there's a lot of issues that can be trades," O'Connor said as Monday night's opening of the NBA summer free-agency shopping market approached.
"We're not out of that game," he added. "Don't take us out of that game, because there are a lot of things we can do."
O'Connor, of course, added no specifics whatsoever.
But with the market flooded with a long list of serviceable restricted free agents (see accompanying chart), it seems the Jazz GM may have trade on his mind throughout the month of July and beyond.
That's because while Utah has taken part in five playoff series over the past two years, he see potential room for improvement.
"I don't think you're ever comfortable, and I don't think you ever sit back and say, 'Ah, we're good enough; we'll go forward,"' O'Connor said. "We're always going to look to improve. Do I like what we have? Yes. Can we do better? Yeah, and if we can, great. But I'm not gonna take a step forward for two steps backward."
The transaction was fully expected, and essentially a simple matter of submitting paperwork.
Millsap, a second-round draft choice out of Louisiana Tech in 2006, averaged 8.1 points and 5.6 rebounds last season.
He hasn't missed a game in his first two NBA seasons, but underwent surgery to repair a torn thumb ligament shortly after the 2008 postseason concluded for the Jazz.
MCLEOD TO PLAY IN REVUE: According to an entry on the Dallas Mavericks' "official" blog spot, ex-Jazz guard Keith McLeod is among several free agents invited to join the Mavs' summer team.
The team will first play next month at the NBA's Vegas Summer League in Las Vegas, then will take part in the Jazz-hosted Rocky Mountain Revue, which will be played July 18-25 at Salt Lake Community College's Lifetime Activities Center.
The full six-team field for the Revue has not yet been announced, but in addition to Dallas and the Jazz Philadelphia also is expected to take part in the summer league for NBA rookies, hopefuls and free agents.
McLeod, 28, has played 200 NBA games over four seasons for four teams, including 119 games with 79 starts for the Jazz from 2004-06.
He didn't play in the NBA this past season.
