Two people were killed and five others injured in separate accidents near Vernal this weekend.

Shayna White, 22, of Duchesne, died Friday after the car she was driving crossed the center line and hit a dump truck head-on, said Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Ted Tingey. She was driving north on U.S. Highway 191 and the truck was driving south on the same highway about 3:30 p.m.

White and her 7-month-old son were first taken to Ashley Regional Medical Center in Vernal, but later the baby was taken by helicopter to Primary Children's Medical Center in Salt Lake City and White was flown to the University of Utah Hospital. White died in the hospital from her injuries. The baby was still in critical condition as of Saturday, Tingey said.

The dump truck driver was treated for minor injuries at the Vernal hospital and was later released.

White and the truck driver were wearing seat belts, and the baby was in an infant car seat, Tingey said. UHP is investigating whether excessive speed caused White to lose control of her car.

On Saturday, a truck going east on U.S. Highway 40 about seven miles west of Vernal, hit a guard rail and rolled over. Four men were ejected from the truck, leaving a fifth man, the driver, inside.

Two individuals were in the truck cab, while two others were in the truck bed. No one was wearing a seat belt, Tingey said.

UHP is investigating this accident, but it appears the driver got distracted by what appeared to be camping equipment possibly blowing out of the truck bed. He veered off the road, overcorrected coming back and hit the guard rail.

A 22-year-old man died as a result of the accident, Tingey said.

The driver received minor injuries and was treated at Ashley Regional Medical Center, while two of the men were in critical condition at that hospital on Saturday and another man was in serious condition.

Tingey said no names were being released as yet, pending notification of relatives.
