Snoop DVD features rapper in '05 show

Since Snoop, known as Calvin Broadus on his birth certificate, will perform at USANA Amphitheatre on Monday, I thought it would be a good idea to tell you about his new DVD.

"Drop It Like It's Hot," which will be released July 8, is a concert DVD that was filmed at his 2005 appearance in Brussels. The rapper was at the top of his game as he tore through his set featuring "Bump Bump," "The Shaznit," "P.I.M.P." and the fan faves "Murder Was the Case," "What's My Name," "Gin and Juice" and "Drop It Like It's Hot."

Those are just a few of the fist-pumping offerings of the show. He also goes into a couple of medleys. One combines "Pump, Pump" and "Chronic Break" before heading into some freestyle territory. The second medley features guest rapper The Game in "Lay Low" and another foray into the freestyle vein.

Snoop's energetic delivery and masterful wordplay comes to light throughout the show. And the fans are delighted to see some of his trademark humor bubble to the surface.

Still, this being a Snoop Dogg release, and a live concert no less, there are some things to take in consideration.

He's brash and says exactly what's on his mind. Therefore, parents take note, the language is rough and tumble and will offend. So, discretion is advised.

In addition to the show, the DVD features a set of extras that include, but are not limited to, a detailed examination of Snoop and how he achieved his icon status, not only in the rap world but in the pop-culture world. And there are two bonus concert songs, "Wrong Idea" and "Deep Cover" from a 2001 show in Jamaica.

Since 1993, Snoop Dogg has been instrumental in bringing rap to the forefront of pop music. And this DVD shows why.
