Ski resorts are looking ahead to summer
Snowbird staff toured and reviewed the resort's upper slopes and with the hot temperatures felt it was time to close. Twice in the past 13 years, in 1995 and 2005, Snowbird has been able to run lifts up to and including July 4.
Snowbird was to have closed its lifts on June 1, but was able to run weekends through June 22.
This year, Snowbird received nearly 650 inches of snow. Its long-term average is 500 inches.
Those resorts offering summer activities, Snowbird included, announced they are open for business.
Snowbird opened its summer activities last on June 13. These include the new four-station climbing wall the Aerial Tram, Alpine Slide, ZipRider, bungy trampoline, mechanical bull and its inflatables. The Peruvian chairlift and tunnel, horseback rides and ATV tours in Mineral Basin are scheduled to begin on the Fourth of July weekend, conditions permitting. When conditions permit, there will also be mountain biking on the resort trails. Summer hours of operation will be 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.
