Utah diver takes 3rd at U.S. Olympic trials
The former BYU and Sky View High standout and 2004 Olympian improved his standing Saturday after finishing Friday night's semifinals in fourth place. He was third following Friday afternoon's preliminaries.
Concluding today at the IUPUI Natatorium in Indianapolis, the four-day Olympic diving trials afford only one guaranteed spot in each of the four diving events men's and women's 3-meter springboard and men's and women's 10-meter platform.
That means two-time Olympian Troy Dumais, who won the men's 3-meter springboard event with a three-round cumulative score of 1,552.90 points Saturday, has punched his ticket for the 2008 Beijing Games.
Dumais, of Austin, Texas, was spotted a 30-point lead at the onset because of his fourth-place finish at the 2008 World Cup.
Christopher Colwill of Athens, Ga., was second at 1,465.10, with Wilcock (1,363.40) narrowly edging Jevon Tarantino of Boca Raton, Fla., (1,362.80) for third.
Wilcock had started Saturday trailing Tarantino by 10 points after Friday's semifinals. The Smithfield native finished the event by averaging 8.28 points per dive, just shy of Colwill's 8.31 average.
The top four finishers were never seriously challenged by any of the other eight divers throughout the three rounds.
Wilcock's hopes to return to the Olympics for a second time, however, are not completely dashed. The top six finishers in each of the trials' events will be invited to a weeklong team selection camp next month in Tennessee where a second diver will be chosen in each event.
Besides the men's individual 3-meter springboard, Wilcock will team up with Hugh Showe III at the camp in hopes of being the U.S. pair to compete in the men's 3-meter springboard synchronized event.
The pair finished second at the 2008 Speed USA Diving Spring National meet earlier this year, They'll be vying against the duos of Colwill and Tarantino, Dumais and Mitch Richeson and David Boudia and Thomas Finchum.
Boudia and Finchum both competed in the men's 10-meter platform this weekend, while Richeson didn't participate in any individual event at the trials.
