State lawmakers Wednesday received a detailed analysis of the need for more affordable housing options in Utah, especially in the wake of the recent home-mortgage crisis.

Members of the Political Subdivisions Interim Committee heard from advocates who support increased development of affordable housing across the state. Gordon Walker, director for the Utah Division of Housing and Community Development, said affordable housing opportunities can be created by eliminating barriers that make it more difficult for potential developers to build those homes. The lawmakers discussed a study on ways to promote community zoning laws that encourage the development of more housing choices. The legislators also sponsored a study on the development of manufactured housing, as well as a review of the cost and regulation of affordable residential home construction.
