It's like 'HSM' goes to 'Camp'
The Jonases (Jonasi?) play (you guessed it) members of a band who are visiting a camp for aspiring stars. Joe Jonas stars as Shane, a music superstar who's tired of the bubble-gum pop he and his band (brothers Kevin and Nate Jonas) are forced to play. When his uncle invites him to teach at Camp Rock where rich kids go to further their musical dreams he agrees.
Meanwhile, on the poor side of Camp Rock, middle-class good-girl Mitchie (Demi Lovato) wants to be a star, but her parents can't afford to send her there. That is until Mom gets a job as the camp cook and Mitchie tags along as sort of the camp Cinderella.
One day, Shane overhears Mitchie's beautiful singing voice ... and the rest is movie-musical magic.
While this is most definitely an attempt to build on the momentum of the "High School Musical" moves, "Camp Rock" is not exactly a Jonas Brothers TV movie. They sing only one song together, and that's an hour into the film.
And Joe Jonas does sing a duet with Lovato.
(That's not criticism. I just wouldn't want you to be disappointed because you're expecting the wrong thing.)
If you don't have cable or satellite, you can still see this movie. ABC (Ch. 4) will air it Saturday at 7 p.m. And not only does "Camp Rock" kick off a summer revival of the iconic "Wonderful World of Disney" franchise, but, according to the network, it's just loaded with extras, including:
• The broadcast premiere of the Jonas Brothers music video "Burnin' Up."
• The broadcast premiere of the Cheetah Girls' music video "One World."
• A sneak peek at the upcoming ABC reality show "High School Musical: Get in the Picture" (which is currently in production right here in Utah).
All of that will fill out a three-hour time slot (7-10 p.m.) for a movie that's airing in a two-hour time slot on the Disney Channel and ABC Family Channel.
"Camp Rock" airs four times on three different channels this weekend: Friday at 9 p.m. and Saturday at 9 p.m. on the Disney Channel; Saturday at 7 p.m. on ABC/Ch. 4; and Sunday at 9 p.m. on ABC Family.
