AMERICAN FORK — Singer-songwriter Chris Woods shares the American Fork Amphitheater stage with another singer-songwriter, Joseph Felt, on Monday as part of the city arts council's Concerts in the Park series.

The two musicians will each take a turn at entertaining the audience.

Originally from Lodi, Calif., Woods won a talent show at Salt Lake Community College a year ago with his song "Forever With Her."

"I won by half a point," he said.

He also was a finalist with that song in last year's Latin category of the 2007 John Lennon Songwriting Contest, an online competition.

Woods now lives in Taylorsville with his wife and four children. His first venture into music began at the age of 10 when his mother bought him a clarinet. Later, at 14, he learned to play guitar and began writing songs. He also accompanies himself on the ukulele and keyboard.

A music teacher for troubled youth at West Ridge Academy, a private school in West Jordan, Woods received his Bachelor of Arts in from Brigham Young University. He performs locally at restaurants, schools and fundraisers. His music — new folk — is an acoustic blend of folk, pop, jazz, Latin and reggae.

Felt, or "Mr. Felt" as he likes to be called, teaches second grade at Deerfield Elementary in Cedar Hills. He formed a trio with his wife, Sarah, and his cousin Ryan Ruff, and he accompanies them through a dialogue between songs. They sing about the importance of education and reading skills.

"I write a song, then teach it to my class," Felt said.

If his students like it, he keeps it. If not, he said, "I scrap it."

The songs are based on the state education core.

The American Fork Amphitheater is at Quail Cove just west of the Mt. Timpanogos Temple, 851 E. 700 North. The show begins at 7 p.m.
