RIVERTON — A man was listed in critical condition Friday morning after police say a pickup truck ran a stop sign and plowed into his vehicle.

Just after 7 a.m. Friday a truck ran a stop sign at the intersection of 13800 South and 4000 West. The vehicle T-boned another car on the passenger-side door, pushing it 200 feet through a fence into a nearby yard, said Unified Fire Authority Capt. Jay Fearnley.

"We're lucky there wasn't a passenger. It would have been a fatality," he said.

The driver of the vehicle that was hit, a 46-year-old man, was flown to a local hospital by medical helicopter with head injuries. The driver of the pickup, an 18-year-old woman on her way to school, was transported by her family to a local hospital to be checked for minor injuries.

There were no signs of drugs or alcohol being factors in the accident. The sheriff's office said speed, however, was likely a factor based on how far the man's vehicle was pushed.

A toxicology test, standard for any serious accident, was being conducted on the woman. Any possible charges were pending the outcome of that report.
